Ski Season Jobs in Queenstown and Wanaka

Queenstown and Wānaka add winter tourism work around their ski areas. Ski-field and nearby hospitality employers recruit seasonal staff, but roles are competitive and depend on the season and employer. Mountain operations generally run in winter and into spring, weather and conditions permitting.

What’s hiring

• On the mountain — lift operations, ski and board hire technicians, ticket checkers, food and beverage at the base. Some technical roles (ski patrol, instructing) need experience or qualifications; most don’t.
• In town — bars, restaurants, cafes, hotels, and hostels all scale up staffing for the season.
• Retail — ski and snowboard shops, outdoor gear stores.

Some entry-level roles do not require previous ski-industry experience, while specialist roles require relevant experience or qualifications. Read each job listing carefully.

Pay and perks

Ski-field and hospitality roles are commonly paid hourly. From 1 April 2026 the adult minimum wage is NZD $23.95 an hour; eligible starting-out and training rates are NZD $19.16. The rate that applies depends on your age and circumstances. Some employers list transport, passes or other staff benefits, but these vary by role and employment type—check the offer rather than assuming they are included.

Timing your arrival

Recruitment can begin several months before the lifts open. NZSki says most winter roles are usually posted around March, with some specialist roles earlier; availability dates vary by employer and role. Apply as soon as suitable vacancies appear. The accommodation problem

• Seek and Trade Me Jobs — filter for the Queenstown-Lakes District.
• Hostel noticeboards — Queenstown and Wanaka hostels are plugged into the seasonal job network; ask on day one.
• Facebook groups — town-specific job groups and general working holiday groups post shifts and vacancies through the season.

Off the mountain, out of season

Outside the ski season, hospitality and tourism work may still be available, but vacancies vary. Check current job listings before relying on a particular role or town for year-round work.
