Quota Countries: Opening Dates & How to Actually Get a Spot

Most of New Zealand’s Working Holiday Visa schemes issue a fixed number of visas each year. Once that quota is filled, the scheme closes until the next round — sometimes closing within hours of opening. If your country’s scheme is capped, the opening date matters more than any other part of your application.

Which schemes are capped

Around two-thirds of NZ’s ~45 WHV partner countries run a capped, quota-limited scheme. Quota sizes vary hugely — from as few as 50 places a year (Luxembourg, Malta) to 15,000 (the UK, NZ’s largest scheme by far). Uncapped schemes, by contrast — including Germany, the USA, France, Japan, and several others — have no annual limit and no rush to apply on a specific date.

Opening dates change every year

Immigration New Zealand confirms each year’s opening dates on its own schedule, and they move from year to year — a date that worked last year is not a safe assumption for this year. Always confirm the current opening date on the official page before you plan around it, especially if you’re reading this guide more than a few months after its last-verified date above.

How to actually get a spot

1. Know your exact opening date and time zone. Dates are set in New Zealand time. If you’re applying from another time zone, convert the opening time in advance — don’t discover the time difference on the day.
2. Have everything ready before the round opens. Passport, funds evidence, and payment method all sorted in advance. You cannot start gathering documents once the round has opened for a small-quota scheme — by the time you do, it may already be full.
3. Apply the moment the round opens, especially for smaller quotas or high-demand countries. For the largest quotas (like the UK’s 15,000), you generally have more breathing room, but smaller quotas (100 places or fewer) can fill within the same day.
4. Have a backup plan. If your scheme’s round has already closed for the year by the time you’re ready, note the next opening date and use the waiting time productively — saving funds, sorting documents, researching where you’ll look for work.

A quota closing doesn’t mean you missed your only chance

Every capped scheme reopens on a schedule the following year. If you’ve missed this year’s round, the practical move is to mark next year’s expected opening date, keep your documents current, and treat the wait as planning time rather than a setback.
