UK Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand: Full Guide for British Citizens

If you hold a UK passport, you can apply for New Zealand’s Working Holiday Visa between ages 18 and 35 — the widest age range of any scheme, and one of only two that goes past 30. It’s New Zealand’s single largest working holiday scheme, with 15,000 places available each year, and it’s one of only two of NZ’s ~45 schemes that don’t require insurance up front (Malaysia’s is the other — insurance is recommended there, not required). • Age: 18 to 35 at the time of application.
• Citizenship and residency: you need a UK passport, and you must normally live in the United Kingdom or one of the Crown Dependencies — Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man.
• No previous grant: if you’ve held this specific working holiday visa before, you can’t apply again — even if you never used it.

The 15,000 quota and this year’s opening date

The UK scheme is quota-capped: once 15,000 visas are issued in a year, the round closes until the next one opens. The 2026 round opened 25 June 2026. That date moves every year — Immigration New Zealand sets it on its own schedule, so don’t assume next year’s round opens on the same day in 2027. Always check the live status before you plan around a date.

With 15,000 places, the UK scheme is far less likely to fill within hours than a small-quota country’s scheme — but it isn’t unlimited either. How long you can stay

The initial visa runs for 12 months, but the UK scheme allows more flexibility than most: you can apply for it as a 12, 23, or 36-month visa from the outset, or apply for a Subsequent Work Visa later to extend a shorter stay out to 36 months in total. A separate 3-month extension is available if you complete a period of work in agriculture or horticulture.

Funds: assessed by the month, not a lump sum

Every other scheme on this site asks for a fixed lump sum. The UK scheme is the exception: you need to show NZD $350 for every month of your visa, plus separate funds for your ticket out of New Zealand. For a standard 12-month visa, that works out to roughly NZD $4,200 — the same figure most other schemes ask for as a flat amount — but if you apply for a longer initial visa, the requirement scales up with it. Insurance and medical: what’s genuinely different here

The UK scheme is the only one of NZ’s ~45 WHV schemes whose official page says nothing about medical insurance at all (Malaysia’s scheme recommends insurance without requiring it — every other scheme makes it a condition). That doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea to travel uninsured — a hospital visit in New Zealand without cover can cost more than a year of a decent policy — it just means Immigration New Zealand doesn’t make it a visa condition for this scheme.

Medical exams work differently by length of stay too. For a standard 12-month visa, no upfront medical exam is required. If you extend beyond 12 months — through the Subsequent Work Visa or by applying for a longer visa initially — a medical examination and chest X-ray become mandatory. If your total stay reaches 24 months or more, you’ll also need police certificates (less than 6 months old) from any country you’re a citizen of and any country you’ve spent more than 5 years in since turning 17.

Do I need travel insurance even though it’s not required?
