North Island vs South Island: Where to Base Yourself

New Zealand splits into two main islands, and most working holidaymakers end up spending more time on one than the other. Neither is objectively better — the right one depends on what kind of work and lifestyle you’re after.

Cost of living

Accommodation costs vary by suburb, season and type of room, and smaller towns do not always have cheaper or more available rentals. Compare current room listings, expected hours and pay, transport and seasonal accommodation before relocating. For Queenstown and ski areas in particular, confirm housing availability with an employer rather than assuming it is included.

Climate and travel style

The South Island’s popular stops include Fiordland, the West Coast, Aoraki/Mount Cook and Abel Tasman. Travel times can be longer than map distance suggests because routes cross mountain passes and road conditions can change. The North Island also has long journeys; check a route planner and current road alerts rather than relying on straight-line distances.

A common approach

Many working holidaymakers base themselves in Auckland or Wellington for the bulk of their year to earn steadily, then spend 4–8 weeks doing a dedicated South Island road trip either at the start or end of their visa.
